Announcement: Sustainable Bolting Course July 2025
Wild Sky Guides is Partnering with Andrew Humphreys from V7 and Brent Roth from Kraken Whitewater to teach a 2 day workshop on sustainable canyon bolting.

Where: Gifford Pinchot National Forest
What: 1 day classroom, 1 day canyon classroom. We will not install any bolts in canyons during class.

SEATTLE, WA – Wild Sky Guides is proud to announce our pilot course on sustainable bolting in PNW canyons. Our two-day workshop is taught by Brent Roth of Kraken Whitewater and features guest instruction from Andrew Humphreys from V7. The course is designed to equip experienced canyoners with the skills for safe, ethical, and sustainable route development.
Promoting Long Term Community Stewardship
This initiative directly supports Wild Sky Guides’ core mission to advocate for better and safer canyoneering practices and to build strong relationships with local land managers and the canyoneering community. The course will focus on teaching the standardized best practices necessary to develop and maintain canyon routes responsibly, reducing impact on both the environment and emergency services

No Permanent Anchors Will Be Installed.
In accordance with the company’s commitment to resource stewardship and its strong relationship with land managers, no bolts will be permanently installed in canyons during the course. The focus is strictly on education and technique, ensuring the natural environment is left unaltered.
In Collaboration With Brent Roth From Kraken Whitewater.
Day 1: Dry Land Practice & Theory. The first day is dedicated to foundational skills in a controlled setting. Participants will learn:
- How to properly rig a complete bolting kit.
- Criteria for selecting high-quality, appropriate bolts and hardware.
- Hands-on practice installing bolts to learn quality placement techniques.
- Tools and techniques for removing old or improperly placed bolts.
Day 2: In-Canyon Application with V7. Led by guest expert Andrew Humphreys, the second day will take place in-canyon. Andrew will teach the advanced tips and tricks for installing safe and sustainable bolts in a real-world environment.
