The Best Adventure in Packwood, WA: Guided Canyoning with Wild Sky Guides!
Looking for the best things to do in Packwood this summer? You need to check out the Electric Boogie canyon. It’s located right in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and it’s hands down one of the most fun trips we run all year.
If you’re heading out our way this June, here’s a breakdown of what a guided canyoning trip down Electric Boogie actually looks like.
What is the Electric Boogie Canyon?
Electric Boogie is a wet, wild canyoning route that is just flat-out fun. On paper, it’s a Level 2 canyon, but honestly? It plays more like a Level 2 Plus. It’s the perfect sweet spot: completely doable if you’re an adventurous beginner, but action-packed enough that experienced canyoneers never get bored.
The canyon itself isn’t incredibly deep, but it gets beautifully narrow. The rock walls are carved smooth and draped in thick, bright green moss—it feels like you’re dropping into a prehistoric Washington rainforest.
The Itinerary: A Perfect Day Near Packwood
1. The Meetup
We start the day meeting up right in Packwood. After a quick intro with your guides, we hop in the cars and drive about 20 minutes deep into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest to reach the trailhead.
2. Gearing Up
Once we park, it’s time to gear up. We’ll hand out the specialized canyon bags and wriggle into our wetsuits right at the vehicles. The water in the Pacific Northwest is definitely brisk in June, but the thick, premium wetsuits we provide will keep you surprisingly warm and comfortable all day.
3. The Approach Hike
Forget about miserable, hours-long approach hikes. One of the best things about Electric Boogie is how easy it is to access. From the parking spot, it’s just a flat 5 to 10-minute walk through the woods before we’re standing at the very top of the canyon.
4. The Descent: Slides, Pools, and Rappels
Electric Boogie gets right to the point. The canyon kicks off immediately with an awesome natural water slide!
For the next 3 hours, we’ll make our way down the gorge. Because of how the rock formed here, Electric Boogie is famous for its slides. You’ll be splashing through deep, crystal-clear pools, rappelling down waterfalls with your guides, and sliding down smooth rock chutes carved out by thousands of years of rushing water.
5. The Exit
After about three hours in the water, the technical part of the canyon wraps up. We do a short, rugged climb out of the gorge, and from there it’s an easy 10-minute hike back to the cars to dry off and dish out some high-fives.
Why June is the Perfect Time to Visit
June is a massive month for the Gifford Pinchot area. The heavy winter snowmelt has usually mellowed out to a safe, manageable level, but there’s still plenty of water flowing to make the slides and waterfalls awesome. Plus, dropping into a cool canyon is simply the best way to beat the early summer heat.
